First Impressions at City North
17 September 2026 ยท By Pavement Print Studio
We are back at City North Shared Futures for a second year. Find us on Cardigan Street in Carlton on Saturday 3 October, 11am to 4pm.
This year we are bringing a movable type activation called First Impressions. Come and set your own words in type, then print them by hand and take the result home.
Type blocks from our own faces, 3D printed and ready to set.
The type is ours. We have drawn a set of original faces and full alphabets, then 3D printed each letter into its own block. You choose a word or a short phrase, set it into the bed the way printers have done for centuries, and pull a print in black ink on coloured paper. Across the day the prints build into a single installation that grows as more people set their words.
There is a lot behind a small print. The studio has taken on new members this year, and between us we have designed every typeface and alphabet in the set. We are still learning the craft of it, working out how to lock up the type and print it cleanly on proofing presses. That slow, hands-on process is part of what we want to share. Old letters, made new.
You do not need to book or bring anything. Just turn up, set a line, and print something to keep. It is free and everyone is welcome.
City North Shared Futures returns to Cardigan Street this year, presented by RMIT. It runs for a single day, and you will find us there on Saturday 3 October, from 11am to 4pm. Come and make your first impression.
