About

Who We Are

Pavement Print Studio is a student-led mobile printmaking project from RMIT Graphic Design Brunswick. Established in 2025, we experiment with different printing processes and new technologies to develop viable methods for print production outdoors, in temporary locations, and unusual spaces beyond the studio. This creates accessible collaborative experiences in public spaces.

Our autonomous studio - housed on a bicycle trailer - brings professional printmaking directly to communities, inviting hands-on participation regardless of experience.

The mobile studio

Our Practice

The studio functions as a nomadic design practice, positioning students as practitioners within authentic community contexts whilst examining the relationship between mobility, accessibility, and collaborative creation.

Core Principles

Accessibility
We bring the studio to people, removing barriers to participation in creative making.

Collaboration
Every project is a shared creative act, with participants becoming co-creators rather than passive recipients.

Education
Students develop professional competencies through real community engagement, not simulated briefs.

Sustainability
Solar-powered operation, environmentally friendly water-based inks, minimal waste production.

Methodology

Spatial Practice

The mobile facility challenges traditional studio boundaries by establishing temporary design spaces within existing community environments. This approach interrogates how physical location influences creative processes and community participation in design outcomes.

Collaborative Production

The studio enables real-time collaborative design production. Community members become co-creators rather than passive recipients, fundamentally altering traditional designer-client relationships.

Pedagogical Approach

Students experience design education through direct community engagement rather than simulated briefs. This approach develops professional competencies whilst contributing meaningful outcomes to community partners, bridging academic learning with social responsibility.

Technical Capabilities

We work with various screen printing and screen-making methods that can be executed quickly on-site in consultation with participants and printers. This flexible approach allows us to respond to different contexts, timeframes, and creative outcomes.

Screen-Making Techniques
Direct-to-screen printing machines for rapid mesh production, hand-cut stencils for immediate tactile engagement, and laser-cut stencils for precise detailed work.

Production Methods
Multiple screen printing processes adaptable to outdoor locations, temporary spaces, and unusual environments beyond traditional studio settings.

Digital Fabrication
xTool M1 Ultra laser cutting for stencil production, digital design workflow for quick turnaround, and solar-powered mobile operation for off-grid printing.

This technical flexibility is central to our practice - we choose techniques based on what works best for each specific project, location, and group of participants.
